The Portuguese government has recently announced a new visa targeted toward the digital nomad community. The visa will allow digital nomads to stay or settle for a certain period of time in Portugal.
This step by the Portuguese government sees Portugal following in the footsteps of other countries and aims to attract digital nomads to the country by providing them with working visas.
Visa applications will be accepted from 30th October 2022.
Visa Options
The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa is divided into two categories.
- Short stay
- Residency permit
The first is aimed at remote workers looking to stay temporarily in Portugal for up to one year.
The second is for digital nomads who are looking to secure a residency visa in Portugal.
To be eligible, remote workers will need to prove a monthly income that is four times the amount of the current minimum income in Portugal and provide a work contract or proof that they are self-employed.
The current minimum monthly income in Portugal is €820.00.
Digital nomads can apply for the Digital Nomad Visa from the Portuguese Consulate in their home country. If the applicant is already in Portugal, they can apply at AIMA (former SEF, the Foreign Borders Office in Portugal).
Advantages of the Digital Nomad Visa
Portugal has been attracting foreign talent for many years through the D7 Visa. The D7 Visa allows anyone to live and work in the country as long as they can earn more than the minimum wage in Portugal.
The Digital Nomad Visa will differ as it is aimed at people that are looking to relocate on a temporary basis. It offers the opportunity of living and working in Portugal but without a long-term commitment.
